I actually quit anime completely across all of my Community College and University years and only started getting back into it laast year?

For me, I just enjoy watching and learning about worlds beyond Earth. Ranging from Isekai shows like Kuma Bear to epic adventures like Death Note.

I will also admit I have no interest in watching every single show per season due to my evolving tastes. So I just pick a few shows, watch them weekly, review, and keep going.
I'm new!

You are just having a phase, probably a bad streak with shows that makes you wonder why you keep watching. Rewatch old and good shit and it's going to go away... leaving that aside.

In my case, I keep watching anime because the SJWs ruined western industry (and they are trying to do the same in the east and we even started to see some censorship in anime/games).

You're right I think growing up has permanently changed my views and tolerance of mid-anime. I'm just a bit sad I can't enjoy anime like that anymore. But I've realized that if I keep trying to like anime like that it'll ruin the medium overall so I just need to move on. I also struggle with feeling like I should go back and complete everything I started but I know if I continue on with that it'll make things worse. Basically, a lot of the feelings I have towards anime nowadays can be changed if I just stop being stubborn about it lol.
@M1KAS My experience is a bit unique. I didn't get into anime until my 20's, so for me I feel like I appreciate it a lot more than I would if I had liked it since childhood. Because I started as an adult, I feel like I can enjoy the themes, and symbolism in a story that would have been completely on seen by me in my younger years. Thus, the amount of emotional and mental investment I get out of anime is greater than it would otherwise have been. Sometimes I just want to watch a relaxing show that isn't always going to require high investment that will just let me turn my brain off and relax after work. I watch anime at my own pace depending on how much time I have in any given week. I also watch a variety of different shows which helps with burn out also. Theirs also participating in discourse about my favorite series with like-minded fans. That's helpful and so is also enjoying other hobbies. Oh yeah Waifus another reason I still love anime. I hope this was helpful.

@DaCraziGuy I've been in this "phase" since 2017 and I have seen anime I've enjoyed since then but the majority just isn't good. I've also rewatched my favorite anime countless times but it doesn't make up for anything. The issue is that I was able to enjoy things like that before but now I really can't stand it and I don't want it to be like that. Simply put I miss being able to watch slop and get at least some enjoyment out of it.

I actually prefer to watch Western TV shows nowadays as they're more appealing and interesting and don't regurgitate the same 5 tropes anime seems to be doing.

Art and character design is one of the things that draws me into a lot of Japanese anime and it has had major influences in my own studies and slowly developing style

Right now mecha/sci fi has really kept my interest in the medium. The amount of really interesting shows in that genre, mecha specifically, means I really need to make time for more shows. I do think there are great seasonals coming out too.

Ultimately, the fact I don't get to watch anime that often, partly because of stress/work (hopefully going to die down soon), partly because of other hobbies, means that when I do come back to anime it feels fresh.

Friends also help. It's always a good discussion point.

Honestly, I think you need regular breaks with any long term hobby. Get into other media, like fantasy/sci fi books, films, just other media in general, will keep anime fresh when you come back to it.

If you've been an anime fan for a while now, what is keeping you here? Do you still hold the same enjoyment you had during those first couple of years when you got into anime? Or has it dwindled over time?
My interest levels have been kinda like an up and down curve. I was loved anime, when. I was a little kid, though I mainly watched/re-watched only certain kinds of shows. I burnt out in early HS, thought I was done totally with it, and then got back in again in my last year of HS and into university. That period of time was probably the peak of my interest. After graduating, anime kinda has become less of a thing, due to getting into other hobbies and just having less time. That said, I actually want to watch a lot more, and hopefully I will be able to soon. Denial really brings the interest back lol.

what keeps it going is the new and evolving animation being presented, the new and old female characters, great characters with solid writing, cool mcs, and plots that can surely engage me.

Anime has become one of my favorite hobbies! Every time I dive into it, I find myself loving the stories and characters even more. But honestly, my journey with anime isn’t always smooth sailing. There are times when I just don't feel like watching—sometimes I even take a break for a whole season! But when a new season comes around, I usually get pulled back in, eager to check out new adventures. Those little breaks can be really refreshing and make the whole experience even better when I finally come back. It’s wild how stepping away for a bit can spark my love for anime all over again!

It just makes me feel things, whether it's butterflies or thrill or anger or making me cry... I have been watching it for long. I discovered it 4 years ago? but it was also a part of my childhood with some anime airing on TV[I loved Doremon and Heidi growing up, I'd watch it with my mom T-T] It's a comfort spot. I just love it

Probably MAL to be honest, the statistic for days watched makes me want to just consume so much anime to get that statistic up, Aswell as its a nice way to end the day however some times I would rather be doing other things than watch anime however Id watch anime anyway just to like keep routine.

For me, there is nothing more interesting than anime even if I tried other mediums... Watching anime casually to pass the boredom is better than any other stuff...

For me it would be the versatility, there is always an exciting title every now and then which completely captures my attention and that's been the case for years even when I'm barely watching anime

@Spast1c From what others have gone through and from my own experience focusing on the MAL stats and consuming anime just to see the numbers go up is a sure-fire way to make yourself resent anime. That alone plays a huge part in why I can't enjoy anime like I once did.

western shows got so repetitive and in-your-face with their messages that (even when I agreed with them most of the time) it just felt exhausting. it honestly got so bad that I found myself returning to anime, even though I was already kinda burnt out from it.

I don't love anime tbh, it's just the only thing I could consume at this point, that's why I'm still here.

Obviously the way I enjoy anime changes overtime. I used to blindly enjoy anything I watch without thinking about the details, so I admired people who tends to being critical with anime they watch. Now, I tried to analyze and find the meaning behind what I watch, then connecting it to something I could relate it then tried to apply the positives as much as I can so my activity didn't go completely pointless.

I've been there; I feel like no matter what I watch, they look shit and continuing them is completely draining me off. Back then I slowed down my pace and completely stopped watching anime for months before going back. The point is to not to force yourself when you're not feeling it and try to take a break once in a while :)

I like Stories. I like some action, I like a little Drama. I like art.
The fact that it's cartoons from Japan really isn't that important, really. It's entertaining.

Anime just happens to produce a lot of fun stuff.

It is in anime that I found the first piece of media that moves me. I will stick around for as long as good anime are still produced, but I have to admit that the industry is moving at the wrong direction.

You just gotta find the same type of anime that made you fall in love with anime in the first place and if you've changed as a person and matured with different tastes, then you'll always find new anime that reignites your love as your taste changes with time. Like dragonball may have gotta people into anime during my childhood, but now as an adult what I love is completely different, but there's still part of me that also loves a classic shounen anime just for the same reasons that I fell in love with anime for. It's usually the hype moments and feeling it gives you

Anime is my favorite source of entertainment. It has helped me a lot and still helps me overcome life's challenges. It has changed me and if I haven't made certain mistakes in my life, it's thanks to it. Since I enjoy every anime I watch and watch at my own pace, I don't feel exhausted watching it. My love for cute anime girls is also one of the reasons that keeps me interested in anime. Anime makes me happy and cute anime girls too so I don't see why I would lose interest in watching it.

Taking breaks for me works well; I've been on a break from watching since Dec'24/Jan'25,
especially after watching a few really good ones because following that up is an even higher gamble on enjoyment.

To be honest, the more time passes, the more I enjoy anime... I guess you could say I’ve kept my childlike soul? I watch them for the same reasons as always: to escape reality, laugh, cry, dream... I don’t expect anything more from something that’s meant to be pure entertainment. I just turn off my brain and enjoy the moment. Sorry you’re feeling that way... Maybe try not to force it, take a break and see if you can find something else to do. If you find something better, great, but if not, you might come back and remember why you loved anime so much in the first place...

I think just continuing to watch it and read manga. I don't see myself ever getting bored of anime because shows and manga are coming out all the time and I still have a lot of old anime I want to watch and experience too.

@M1KAS well, my phase lasted 5 years, maybe you should take a break. Another thing you could try is checking genres that you usually don't watch, but I don't think you should force yourself because you are going to just hate anime on the long run,
